Databases

Finding the ‘right ‘ materials or contractor is something that bedevils anyone trying to maintain or conserve historic structures and landscapes.  HBAS are establishing a database of suppliers as well as contractors and consultants.

Entry onto the database will be limited to those who produce or supply products that are both suitable and appropriate to maintain the historic built environment.  Contractors and consultants will need to show that they really understand traditional, vernacular and historical building techniques, materials and their use to protect and preserve the historic fabric and environment.

This will be an integrated database that is collated by HBAS where all the entrants are checked by means of references from their clients before they are accepted onto the database.

To safeguard the quality of the database we welcome comments from our members on the firms or organisations on the database that they have used or employed.  All database entrants will be continually monitored and if bad reports are received and are subsequently proven then that name and details will be removed from the database.

Those who want to be considered for the database first complete an application form that is obtainable from HBAS.  On receipt of the details requested from the applicant, the most important consideration will be the need to show that their skills, services or materials are appropriate.  This is to ensure the protection of the built heritage by avoiding those products, tradesmen or advisers whose actions can do more harm than good.

To ensure that the entrants on the database keep their details up to date there is a biennial renewal process as well as continuing random reference sampling.  Similarly, those on the database whose standards fall below that which is considered appropriate to the historic environment will be removed from the list.

The database will to available to HBAS members who can obtain details of firms, organisations or individuals that best meets their requirements.  Requests for information from the database will not be classed as an enquiry in respect of the two included within the normal annual membership subscription.
